Up to 2.5 billion paper coffee cups are thrown away every year. Friends of the Earth want Environment Secretary Andrea Leadsom to back new rules to end coffee cup waste.
While some cafes promote re-usable and recyclable cups, action is needed to make all the big coffee chains end the waste.
In the UK less than 1 in 400 of coffee-cups are recycled. Some of the cups can’t be recycled.
Coffee cup waste litters our streets, our countryside, and our oceans. The multi-billion pound businesses must sort this problem out.
New rules on plastic bags have already cut waste dramatically. Now we want to end coffee cup waste too.
Some outlets give you a discount when you take in your own coffee cup or provide a recyclable one. It’s time all coffee drinkers were rewarded for re-using their cups, and cups that can’t be recycled must be banned completely.
Together we can reduce the waste of coffee-cups. We have already done it with plastic bags, and we can do it again.
Ask Andrea Leadsom to take action on disposable coffee cups.
