On January 26 there was a peaceful protest in the city of Dnipropetrovsk. About 5 thousand people marched from the city’s park to the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council. People demanded that the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council cancelled their decision to support the amendments adopted by Ukrainian parliament that ban public assembly, restrict information sharing and restrict the activities of non-governmental organisations. These amendments are unconstitutional and break European and international law.

The demonstrators elected three activists to negotiate with Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council, these were Andriy Denysenko, Vadim Shebanov and Pavlo Khazan. They had a talk with Mr Krupsky the vice-chair of Dnipropetrovsk Regional Administration.

The activists asked for the safety of the demonstrators of violence directed against them. But police arrested many activists including one of negotiators Vadim Shebanov.

Mr Shebanov is well-known Dnipropetrovsk activist, member of Friends of the Earth Ukraine, chair of one of sport associations, public activist and former deputy of Dnipropetrovsk City Council.

Mr Shebanov was released from prison on 31 January, but is under house arrest for two months pre-trial detention.

Take action

Please ask the Ukrainian authorities to drop the charges against Vadim Shebanov and the other other activists.
